Shifter rebuild (manual tranny)

You will need a few parts:

socket F5TZ-7228-A
spring E8TZ-7Z120-A (1package of 2)
spacer E8TZ-7E018-A (1 package of 4)
spring E9SZ-7G046-A.
New boot E9SZ-7277-A

Procedure:

  1. Remove the console. The shift knob unscrews, just give it a good twist.
  2. Detach the 3 bolts holding the brake to the floor.
  3. Remove the soundproofing pad on top of the large dust boot.
  4. Remove the large rubber dust boot which seals the floor. You may have to cut the soundproofing.
  5. You are now looking at the top of the shifter. Clean the area, and remove the 4 bolts holding the shifter on the trans.
  6. Remove the shifter, and clear away any debris from the old parts you can find.
  7. Remove the 2 bolts holding the upper and lower shift lever together.
  8. Remove the 3 bolts on the top of the shifter, and dissasemble.
  9. Place, in this order, the new socket 7228 (cup side down), all 4 spacers 7E018 (trust me), and one spring 7Z120 (the 3 prongs go down into the 3 notches in 7228), plate 7D462 (put sealant top and bottom on this plate), and boot 7277.
  10. Put Loctite 242 on the screws 7A443, and install (make sure you get the left/right orientation correct).
  11. Install new spring 7G046 on the back end of 7F018.
  12. Put sealant around the opening in the case, and insert the ball on the lower shift lever into the top of 7F018. MAKE SURE WHEN YOU DO THIS THE UPPER "L" OF SPRING 7G046 IS ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE LOWER SHIFT LEVER.
  13. Install the 4 screws into the shifter housing with Loctite 242.
  14. Install upper shift lever, upper boot, soundproofing, handbrake, console, and shift knob.
Parts are cheap, the job is done in less than 2 hours, and the shifter will work great! You should have 4" of throw front to back, and maybe about 1/8" in any direction when in gear. This is probably a dream come true if you are currently missing socket.
