Improving 1/4 mile times

Well...every car responds a little different. Between all the variables (tires, springs, shocks, weight, gears, etc) its hard to say which way your car will launch best. Here are some tips on how to improve your quarter mile times:

  • Get as many runs as possible on the track. It will be the best to get there before they open and being one of the first cars there. This belive it or not gives you about 3 extra runs than if you would showe up an one hour later.
  • In those first three runs leave the car in drive and do everything exactly the same except the way you launch.
  • Try leaving off idle.
  • Power braking to 1500 and then maybe to 2000...see which one get you the quiclest time.
  • Once you have the info then you can start playing around with your shift points.
  • Try shifting higher or lower and see what that does, take notes on each run and what effect it had on times.
  • Don't forget to include amount of time bewtween runs because if you take a long time between runs your car will cool down and will run faster without you doing anything different.
  • Try making a schedule of going to test and tune twice a month and stick to it. I guarantee without doing anything else to your car within a month and a half (3-4 trips to track) you will drop half to three quarters of a second off your time. Most test and tune sessions cost $10-20, so for less than a hundred dollars you are getting a major return.
