Adding Shifter Position Indicator |

|
For those who have added a leather shift boot, a shifter position indicator somewhere else on the dash would be a nice touch. An electronics guy came up with a really cool, elaborate idea involving a sliding potentiometer and an alphanumeric display.
The best idea I could come up with, since everything will be covered by
the leather boot, is to mount a small magnet on the shift lever and use double-stick tape or glue to mount magnetic switches on top of the indicator plate (the one that says P/R/N/etc.) Although an alphanumeric display would be really sweet, I personally would be content with a series of LEDs in the correct order. I'm thinking of either mounting a plate over the sunglass holder or putting the LEDs where the maintenance minder would be if my car had it, over the stereo. I would like to label the lights, but that would be tough to do and still look factory. I plan to use rectangular 2-color LEDs and make them glow green normally and have the selected gear in amber.
OR
Mount a magnet on the shift lever, and a series of hall effect
transistors along the travel path (HE transistors are simply
magnetically actuated transistirs, mangnetic switches would do the same
basic thing).
Then, you could simply run each of the outputs of the transistors
through a resistor (of appropriate value for the chip) to a display controller chip (I know they make one but don't have a part # for you) or PAL chip which would set the LED or LCD display to whatever you wanted.. in this case PRND21.
I'd imagine that you can make this out of electronics hobby supplies for
under $20, and it would all fit under your shift boot if not under the center console itself.
