150 mph Speedometer Change |

All of us want the high mph speedos instead of the stock 120. You can't quite buy a speedo for Thunderbirds that reaches 145 and up. BUT, there is close enough resolution - using a Ford SHO speedo. The only negative thing about the Taurus speedo is that at night the speedo lights up as a different shade of green (less blue more green). But it closely contrasts well with the other guages.
Ford SHO uses a 150 mph Speedo which sort of fits our cars with a little modifications. Get your self an SHO speedo from a wrecked SHO or buy it at a discount from Five Star Ford TCCoA page. If it doesn't work you can always return it to them.
Once you get that speedo, fallow thses steps:
- Take the dash apart. Watch out for the defrost swich on the right hand side of the dash, just unbolt the dash and disconnect the wire harness from it with a screw driver. Then just start applying even pressure to pull the black plastic off.
- Tilt your steering wheel accordingly to make enough room to slide the plastic out.
- The clear plastic cover will be next, be careful not to scratch it up. You will need either hex or allens to remove all of these screws (7).
- Pull the old speedo out, and test the new one plugged-in.
- There is a white plastic post on the lower right that the speedo is
slightly hitting when trying to fully seat. In that case, just use some sort of a raisor-blade tool to trim this down.
- There is also a rectangular gap in the bottom of the new speedo (for
taurus digital odometer). Just cut a slightly larger piece of the black backing from the old speedo (measure carefully) and wedge it behind the opening.
I'm not too sure if that works on all year T-Birds, but it definitely works on a '96-'97. You can get a '94-'95 145 mph speedo that should work with all the T-Bird.
