COLD AIR Intake
Well..you're not gonna get 40 HP...20 at best. Ram Air is VERY simple to make..and it'll set you back around $50 with the cone filter. You need very little to do it: a 45 degree mandrel bent 3 inch exhaust pipe, two 3 inch hose clamps, and a 3" diameter aluminium or plastic hose.
The install is simple. First unclamp the MAF from the engine inlet, then remove the air cleaner housing top. The MAF is bolted to it by three bolts; remove them and CAREFULLY put the sensor aside for now.
Next, remove the air temperature sensor from the housing and put it aside. Now the airbox is held down by three nuts; remove them and remove the airbox. Toss it aside. Go under the car and remove the ducting under there (air silencer-a piece of plastic tube runing to the side of the fender). Install the MAF sensor to the pipe you bought. Using the short piece of rubber or aluminium hose, clamp it tight (you don't want any air leaks). Install the pipe onto the engine intake, and pass the MAF through the hole where the airbox USED to be.
Now, go under the car, and install the K&N cone filter (Part # re-0920 9" cone w/ 3" flange), clamp it down and you are done under there.
Now, drill a hole thru the sheet metal to where the filter is now and thread the aircharge sensor into that, reinstall the wiring and your are done.
This will cost you less than $50, including the filter. Just disconnect the computer for a couple of hours and give the comp time to relearn it's programming for the full HP benefit. Should be worth about 20hp or so and the throttle response is far better and the car sounds better when you nail it. One recommendation: make an access panel to reach the filter for cleaning.
Another way to do it:
1. 1 length of 3" pvc pipe about 18 inches long...you won't need this much, but you can cut it down to size....40 series is pressure resistant and may handle heat better
2. a 3" rubber 90 degree elbow used in plumbing applications. It has to be cut down to accomodate the angle from the PVC pipe to the MAF. Cut the collar off and use it to clamp the smaller diameter section. The smaller diameter curved part of the elbow will tuck inside the collar.
3. You'll need 3 band clamps. One for the MAF, one to attach the pvc to the elbow, and one to connect the pvc to the air filter.
4. Some WD-40 makes sliding the pipes into each other easier. Also, have a sharp knife handy for cutting the rubber elbow. Use a band clamp to guide your cut. A hack saw will be needed to cut the pvc pipe. A bolt and washer will be needed to secure the end of the cone filter into the inner panel under the bumper. A drill will be needed to drill the hole for the bolt on the end of the filter to thread through.
