Traction Assist vs. Limited Slip |
|
|
Traction Assist is supposed to apply the brakes to the wheels that slip.
Under normal driving, you can hear and feel when the traction assist kicks in, in which case the best thing to do is ease off the gas anyway, both to regain traction and prevent excessive wear on brakes, etc., as your engine and brakes are working against each other. It's kinda like Steven Wright's theory of putting a humidifier and a de-humidifier in the same room and letting 'em fight it out.
Of course, be sure to shut off the traction asst when you know you're
gonna have some induced wheel spin. Otherwise, leave it on but ease up when it kick's in.
"Posi" has become the generic term for a Limited Slip differential.
The "true posi" is a locker. Lockers positivly lock both sides together mechanically, giving complete torque to both sides when your heavy on the gas. Not a good way to go with our half shafts, you'll probably snap a few. They have a habit of staying locked in turns untill you learn how to drive them right. And as we all know, the inside tire spins slower than the outside tire, and if they can't, things tend to break. You got to have a *VERY* carefull foot.
You can get these from a few places, Auburn Gear, Ford SVO (Motorsport #M4001M373 = 3.73+'posi'+Al case for $585), just to name a couple. If you want better off the line acceleration put gears in now, as the rear end has to be dissasembled to put in the unit.
