Front Wheel Bearings

Generally the front wheel bearings on RWD cars consist of a pair of cup and cone bearing assemblies with the inner pair being larger than the outer and can be either caged tapered rollers or balls.

The hub is ultimately held on by a thick locking washer, a nut or nuts which are sometimes castilated to take a split pin. Sometimes a special thick thrust washer is used with a nut and special slotted hex collar which slips over the end of the spindle/nut and pinned in place with a split pin.

The hardened tapered outer races are press fitted to the hub and if you catch it soon enough only the bearing assemblies need to be replaced not the hub also. If the race is loose in the hub then it is game over for that hub, makes a good deep water sinker though. Bearing specialist stores exist all over and all you need is the maker of the bearing and the numbers stamped into the end of the cup/cone.

Generally front bearings are adjusted by tightening the nut to a specified torque and backing off the specified fraction of a turn. You will have to check the shop manual to see what is required. Sometimes the inner bearing do not come with built in seal but the seal is press fitted to the rear of the hub. The outer seal is achieved by the grease cap.
