Choosing right oil weight |
|
|
Which weight of oil should I be running in my MN12? The owner's manual
says 5W-30 is preferred, but the factory service manual recommends 10W-30.
Either of the viscosity ratings would be fine. Most all viscosity
range motor oils are designed for most of climatic ranges
encountered throughout the nation, hence the higher weight 30W, 40W, etc., ratings represent the oil's lubricantion abilities to
withstand both higher engine temps., as well as higher outside road
conditions, etc.
The lower viscosity ranges, 5W, 10W - reference the oil's properties to perform well in extremely colder climatic conditions, hence the lower viscosity numbers there.
Arguements/debates are commonplace when dealing w/mulit-viscosity
ratings and performance, reliability, etc., but your only apparent concern is whether there's justifiable diff. in 5W vs. 10W for what I'd assume, would be Oregon, USA.
Strick-drag cars, and race engines may feed off of a straight diet of
say, 50W petro. products, or higher...and if one made residence in the Antartic tundra, anything higher than 5W-10W might sludge up the engines so bad, they may well not even turn over, in time?
