DOHC Engines Swap

If you plan on getting a Cobra DOHC engine from the dealer, plan on spending bout $6500 for the "crate" engine. If you are using the Cobra engine you will need a new flex plate (flywheel) from a 4.6 truck because the Cobra crank flange uses 8 bolts, the SOHC and MK VIII use 6. Cobra engine will require a new hood. You can use a set of Cobra SVO headers, the steering rack was off set to the drivers side with a set of offset bushings installed at 90 instead of 180. Several people noticed no effects from This.

You will need different EEC and EEC harness, also since the Cobra was only offered with a 5 speed, there is no Cobra EEC that will control you 4R70W automaitc, you will have to use the MK VIII EEC. You will be mixing a MK VIII EEC and harness with a Thunderbird installed wiring harness and maybe the Cobra's engine harness. The color codes on these are not consistent, so This can get a little trickie.

The rule of thumb for a project like This. Figure what it will cost, then double that. If you thisnk you still want to do it go for it, it's better to allow more money than you need that get half way done and run out of money.

There are some things that should be done while your in there. New torque converter, shift kit, it's cheaper and easer to do it while it's apart and before it's completely broken.

Engine $4500-$6500 EEC $400 EEC harness $200 Flex plate $45 Headers $350 MAF $200 Exhaust pipe $300 (w/hi flow cats) hood $500 (plus paint) Trans work $??? Misc parts $??? Spark plugs, hose, air inlet ducting.
